Pasteis de Belem

Rua de Belem 84-92, 1300-085 Lisboa

Traditional Portuguese 'pastelaria' since 1873. The original.

Delicious 'pastéis de nata' in a nice cafe among blue 'azulejos'. These small cakes are served still warm and you eat them with some cinnamon on top. Delicious! A 'bica' (espresso) or 'galao' (cafe latte) goes well along the pasteis.

Make sure to take away a box of six 'pasteis' for those left behind at home.

Hotel Hammer

If you would like to have even the taxi driver laughing at you when you mention the name of your hotel, stay at Hotel Hammer. But seriously: it's basic, but centrally located (just opposite the main train station), clean, with friendly staff and basic breakfast and very affordable. And there's apples for free at the reception at all times.

Dinnercafe Wenders

Directly at the Prinsengracht, in summer you can also sit outside. A friendly gay couple is preparing a very good combination of Dutch and Indonesian food.
Try the 'garnelenkroketjes' as a starter.

Casanova

Cais da Pedra, Loja 7 , Doca do Jardim do Tabaco, Alfama, Lisboa, t 21 887 7532

Very hip Italian restaurant directly at the river Tejo. Young and informal audience and always crowded, you might need to queue for a while, but pizza and the view on the river are worth the wait.

To call a waiter you have to switch on the red bulb that hangs above every table.
